Women's Aid Organization started in 1979 whereby the late Tun Tan Siew Sin was awarded the Tun Razak Award for his invaluable contribution to the country. Then, the pioneer volunteers worked as a collective to formulate the operating principles of self help and self empowerment for battered women who turned to WAO for help.

Their mission is to create a society that is free of violence against women. Whereas their visions are to promote and create respect, protection and fulfillment of equal rights for women and to work towards the elimination of discrimination against women, and to bring about equality between women and men. WAO will be talking about domestic violence and the cycle of violence.

Nafise Motlaq is an Iranian photojournalist who lives in Malaysia. She has worked as a photographer for Iran newspaper and printed media since 1999. Her photographs have been exhibited in Iran and also overseas. She is also one of the photographers at OnAsia. Irene Fernandez is a director and co-founder of the non-governmental organization called Tenaganita which promotes the right of the poorest, migrant workers and other oppressed people. She was born in 1946 and a mum to three children and several foster children. She has been arrested in 1996 and charged with 'maliciously publishing false news' due to her report entitled, "Abuse, Torture and Dehumanised Conditions of Migrant Workers in Detention Centres" in 1995 and found guilty in 2003 after 7 years of trial and convicted to one year imprisonment. However, she never gives up to fight and stand up for the human rights. She is one kind of the whistleblowers that Malaysia need.

Ezra Mohd Zaid is the head of ZI Publications, a new independent Malaysian publishing house. Ezra is a personable and engaging young man bursting with vigour and wonderful ideas to shake up the local literary landscape a bit—exactly the kind of publisher we need in a contemporary Malaysia: broadminded, intelligent, passionate, funny and straight-talking at the same time. Ezra had completed his high school in Geelong Grammar School in Australia and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Philosophy from The University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He had also hosted a series of 5 to 10 minutes political satire show that was called ‘That Effing Show’ (TES). If you are interested in learning and finding out more about some of the answers to all of the questions above, or would like to contribute some of your thoughts and opinions regarding the issue of sexuality rights, come to our workshop! We will be focusing on talking about the rights of the LGBTIQ community in Malaysia. So come and join in the fun! :)

ANIMAL RIGHTS : "MEAT EATERS IN, VEGAN OUT"

We have a choice, but they don't. We have a voice, but they don't. Where have humanity gone wrong? Everyone is entitled to their basic rights and this goes for animals too. It is undeniable that humans are self-centered and therefore animal sacrifice themselves for our food, our entertainment, our source of energy and our everything. They are living, breathing, hurting members of our global family. It's easy to feel sorry and hope someone saves them, but why can't you be the one that steps up and make a difference? You may think that one person can't make much difference, but that is a terrible misconception. Stop feeling sorry for these animals and take a stand for what's right.

The Animal Rights team will guide you through the behind of animal testing, domestic abuse of animals, animals abused for entertainment and more specifically the treatment of animals behind factory farming. Get to know the truth and how to protect their rights at the workshop!

Hear Us Out 7 in Resonance was a success! Thank you so much everyone for making it a success.

A big shout out to our GREAT and TALENTED performers! Fathanah and her dance crew; Ras, Fuad, Afiq and Ashraf. Khabibah and her great guitarist. Our very own pianists, Yuhang and Sabrina. Not to forget, the awesome singer and guitarist from Inti College. You guys are awesome!

And to all who had donated to support our cause, thank you again! We appreciate your support! Reef Check Malaysia is a part of Reef Check Foundation that was founded in the year 1996. It has been registered as an NGO in 2007 after British Government funded them in 2006. They are committed in conserving coral reefs in Malaysia. Reef Check Malaysia reaches the citizens to raise the awareness by having a program called EcoDriver Training and other outreach programs. Reef Check also conducts surveys on regular basis.

Ecosystems and you: Why should you care?

Ecosystems are the basic building blocks of the natural environment. They provide a range of “ecosystem services” – goods and services that human society relies on, including food, climate regulation and crop pollination. However, human actions are depleting this natural capital, to the point where it can no longer be guaranteed that they will continue to provide these essential services. Focusing on coral reefs, the workshop will discuss the range of services we derive from them, what is going wrong with them and the impacts that will have on all our daily lives.

The Hear Us Out conference is a global-issues themed conference organized by the Canadian & World Issues classes of the Canadian Pre-University (CPU) in Taylor's College Subang Jaya. It's currently in it's 7th cycle under the guidance of our *ahem* awesome World Issues teacher, Mr. Colin Boyd Shafer.

The core missions of the Hear Us Out Conference are as follows :

To connect the students within the local community and vice versa.
Raising awareness about the global issues and the solutions that can be taken.
Raising funds for the local NGO's within Malaysia.

The theme of Hear Us Out 7 is the Teenage Movements.
as follows:

We, as teenagers are capable of making significant changes.
We, as teenagers should not underestimate our potential in changing the world.
It is the time that we realize, that we can make a change.

HUO7 is a conference to educate and tell the public about the arising and ongoing global issues. HUO7’s advocacy is about teenage movements and how we stand for difference to make a better change. In this conference, we will have several workshops presented by the, keynote speakers, NGOs and also 10 topics presented by the World Issues classes’ students. For example, we have Ms. Shobana Nair and Mr. Ezra Mohd. Zaid for our keynote speaker and there are also some NGOs like WWF Malaysia, MyConstitution, UndiMsia,Amnesty International Malaysia, Childline Malaysia, Unscientific Malaysia and Yvonne Fong. All of us are going to present you topic like Global Warming, Education for All, Women’s Right, Freedom of Speech, Animal Abuse, Sexuality Rights, Unnecessary Spending, Right of the Child, Poverty, Global Health and a lot more interesting topic awaiting for you. It is the time that we realize, that we can make a change.

Childline Malaysia is a non-profit project establishing 15999 Childline, a 24-hour dedicated helpline for children in need of care, protection and information. By offering them a friendly, listening ear, we want to reach out to children before they reach crisis point.

The helpline was launched in November 2010, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, and has since received more than 5000 calls from children in Malaysia on issues from loneliness and family conflicts, to bullying and abuse.

A Child's Right to be Heard - Helping Children Speak Out

Every child has an opinion, a thought, a feeling, that deserves to be heard, and to be acknowledged. We often hear the phrase 'children are meant to be seen, not heard', but a child's right to be heard, to express themselves is enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC).

You will be guided through child rights, specifically the right to be heard, and how you, as a youth, can help a child express him / herself, so that they do not feel neglected or unheard. The tools you learn can be used in all aspects of your life - from work, to advocacy to direct aid.

Michelle will be facilitating the workshop. She is the project officer at Childline Malaysia. She has been working with children and child rights since she was 15. A child advocate, turned youth advocate, and now advocate for children and youth, her passion is in developing children and youth to reach their potential as peer advocates and participate fully in all aspects of their lives and society.

Self-Advocacy: How to raise funds and get the help you need

Since the inception of my Heart4Hope campaign in December 2005, I have raised more than a million ringgit to obtain medical treatments in America. Eight out of ten surgeries of mine were performed in the United States. As a result, I have survived and still thriving after eight brain surgeries, one spine surgery and another on a peripheral nerve. No other Malaysian with Neurofibromatosis has survived this far.

How did I manage to raise the funds year after year, surgery after surgery? On the surface, I am selling things to earn the money. But is that all I am doing? What makes people want to get involved and support my cause?

As time passes, many have come to me for moral support and guidance on how to raise their own funds. From my experience in assisting others, I learn that few can see what my campaign is truly about. Hence, I decided to talk about it explicitly so that others facing similar difficulties can do the same to acquire the help they need.

[About Past Conferences] - Out to Make a Change.

CHILDREN should be seen and not heard!” Fortunately, this oft-repeated mantra no longer holds true today.

With globalisation and the rapid growth of Malaysia’s ICT infrastructure, comes a corresponding increase in awareness of world issues among Malaysia’s youth, who are full of ideas and opinions on human rights, global warming, hunger and poverty, peacekeeping and infectious diseases, among others.

Wanting to make a difference about the issues confronting the world today, 55 World Issues students of the International Canadian Pre-University (ICPU) programme at Taylor’s University College in Selangor organised a Hear Us Out! conference recently.

Aptly themed, ‘Listen. Act. Make a Change’, the one-day event featured keynote speakers Youssouf Mohammad Oomar from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Andrew Tan, an exco member of the Malaysian AIDS Council.

“All the youth in Malaysia are very lucky to be able to study in school, which will open up corridors of opportunity to better and empower themselves as well as society in due course,” said Youssouf.

“The place of a child is on a bench in a school. In many parts of the world, we see children becoming labourers, being sold for sex, being abused and deprived of one of their most basic rights – the right to education.”

Youssouf urged the students to take their discussions about facilitating change a step further by promoting change in social behaviour and integration, and finding viable solutions for problems.

“What is important is how you are engaged in your own learning. It is your life. And that is the life of the whole world,” he added.

Tan showed participants videos on the history and development of HIV/AIDS in the world, and efforts by youths to boost awareness of the problem in South Africa, Ukraine, Jamaica, India and Botswana.

“Our statistics show that 30 students in Malaysia were infected with HIV/AIDS in 2007 alone,” said Tan, who urged the students to be responsible for their own health and safety by taking the necessary precautions and to avoid hanging out with irresponsible peers.

ICPU World Issues lecturer Elizabeth Christie, who mooted the idea of Hear Us Out!, attributed its successful organisation and implementation to the initiative and diligence of the students, who also put together two workshop sessions.

Among the topics presented at the workshops were biodiversity and the ecosystem, deforestation, natural disasters - prevention and mitigation, control of infectious diseases, global warming, education for all, international labour and migration, biotechnology rules, illegal drugs, terrorism, and peacekeeping.

“We managed to spread the word about what’s important and why we must act upon those issues, now. I felt the urge to do something right away,” said Eleena Toh Shu Phei, one of the students on the programmes and registration committee.

“The conference also gave a new meaning to teamwork and friendship – I realised that we can do anything when we put our heads and hands together.”

Liberata Julian Rushaigo from Tanzania chipped in: “All the restless nights and stressful days were worth it in the end. We talked about the present and suggested ways to make the world a better place. I will always remember this conference as it was organised by youths, for youths.”
